Abstract. This encyclopedia on CD-ROM was created for the 100^th anniversary of one of the largest museums of the world. It was created with a close cooperation with known Russian art scientists and the Russian Museum employees. Masterpieces of representational art, description of these artistic works, the history of their creation and the biographies of the artists (along with classical, national and religious music) are incorporated on the CD-ROM. The CD-ROM has a uniform purpose – to allow the user to become acquainted with the basic stages of development of Russian representational art.

The Encyclopedia sections include plans of the Museum, masterpiece gallery, exposition of the Russian Museum for various periods, dictionary of art terms and definitions, comments for paintings with Biblical interpretation. For the first time description of the complex of palaces belonging to the Russian Museum is included. Information on their history, architecture and interiors is given.

The Encyclopedia contains about 200 paintings and fragments including Old Russian Painting, art of the XVIIIth Century, first half of the XIXth Century, second half of the XIXth Century and the beginning of the XX th Century; 1, 200 images; video fragments; over 250 pages of detailed descriptions of interiors of almost all main exposition of the Museum; about 150 musical fragments with a total duration over 4 hours.

This Encyclopedia on CD-ROM is the winner of 1997 Computer Press Competition.
