Christ the Saviour Cathedral – the Eyewitness
of Russian History

Abstract. The disc is devoted to the history of Christ the Savior Cathedral erected to commemorate the victory of Russia in the Patriotic War in 1812. Each chapter of the disc describes a certain period in the history of the Cathedral. Together with detailed descriptions the disc contains lots of illustrations highlighting the tragic and heroic pages from the Russia’s past such as paintings by famous Russian painters, as well as video fragments from Sergei Bondarchuk’s movie "War and Peace" and documentaries, fragments of sacred music, Russian and French military marches, Cossack songs of the early XIX century, Tchaikovsky’s overture "1812", Ludwig van Beethoven Symphony 3 "Eroica" and others, interactive maps of the Borodino battle, panoramic views of Moscow of the XIX century and nowadays. A separate division deals with the architectural history of the Cathedral including 3D models of the existing Cathedral and its projects. The disc is based upon the collections of Schusev Museum of Architecture, Public Historical Library, Russian National Cinema and Photo Archive, Moscow Municipal Integrated Archive Collection.
